Tag Heuer Monaco is one of the most famous timepieces of the 20th century. The popularity of this watch is a consequence of its connection with Steve McQueen who wore the model while filming the 1970s movie, LeMans. Now, everyone recognizes this design as the legendary timeless watch worn by Steve McQueen.
The Tag Heuer Monaco is a real phenomenon in the watches world and its fame is a consequence of its important role in the classic movie Le Mans. Steve McQueen chose to wear this watch on his wrist and by doing so countless watch lovers and racing enthusiasts grow fond of the uniquely designed Monaco.
Interestingly enough, the design of the Monaco case was not the result of Heuer’s work, but of the case maker Piquerez. In 1968 this skilled artisan proposed to Heuer a totally unique oversized, waterproof square case for its racing inspired models. At that time, this size and shape were completely innovative, an “avante garde” look for those with a passion for fast automobiles. The brand new and interesting Monaco was launched with the famous Calibre 11 and it soon turned out to be a smashing success.
Within the last couple years, Tag Heuer has drafted two separate directions for the Monaco collection. Gradually, the series was split into two design categories. One was the heritage-themed watches that emphasized a vintage look, iconic for the 70s like the Tag Heuer Monaco Calibre 11 launched in 2015. The second one was meant for those who adore modernity and a more avant garde look. This category includes the chronograph models like the LS and the Twenty-Four. Monaco isn’t just a piece in the complex Heuer puzzled-history, but an important step in the evolution of modern horology. The newer Monaco models redefine the old flat, square designs by adding a three-dimension look to the case and a spectacular wrap-around sapphire crystal.
Apparently, 2015 has been a transition year for Tag Heuer as it has made some major moves towards redefining the looks of its Monaco line. Under the leadership of Jean-Claude Biver, the latest Monaco models take the “Boutique Edition” name addition and enchant with new bold visuals that stir our interest for these legendary timepieces.
Tag Heuer means diversity and functionality so, naturally, its Monaco collection is available in numerous Calibre versions like Calibre 11, Calibre 12, Calibre 6 and Calibre 36. The size of the case and the dial layout depends on the type of Calibre. For instance, Calibre 6 has a 37 mm case and the dial includes only a squared sub-dial at 6 o’clock. Tag Heuer Monaco Calibre 11 and Calibre 12 have a 39 mm case diameter and on its dial there is a date window at 6 o’clock, and two sub-dials at 3 and 9 o’clock. The Tag Heuer Monaco Calibre 36 has a 40.5 mm case and 3 sub-dials- at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock.
For those who like an easily recognizable luxury watch with a weakness for racing cars, the Tag Heuer Monaco is the perfect choice for a stylish and elegant look.
