Description
The Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT is an impressively designed watch that was inspired by a vintage timepiece used by the Italian Navy. The slightly more complex dial is a revolutionary change for the brand that in recent years has reinvented most of its classic models by adding innovative features and functions. By all means, this stylish GMT wristwatch is a statement of elegance, precision and functionality.
Typical characteristics of the Italian manufacturer, the timepiece includes a distinctively styled dial with large Arabic numerals and hour markers, a satin-finished cushion-shaped case with a beautifully polished bezel and an over-sized winding crown with the iconic protective locking system that presses the crown tightly into the case. Nevertheless, the true innovations of this model are what set it apart from the rest of Panerai collections- the second time zone function, the power-reserve display positioned on the back, the date window at 3 o’clock and the seconds reset mechanism.
Over the dial there is a 2.6mm thick coated sapphire crystal paired-up with a polished steel bracelet. The minimalist yet industrial look of the timepiece is completed by the 44 mm wide case and the attractive bracelet with angular Y-shaped links. Furthermore, the case has been designed to withstand extreme pressure associated with diving at depths of 300 meters.
At the inside of the watch beats the exceptional Panerai in-house P.9003 Calibre. This automatic mechanical movement has been created exclusively by the brand and it features 233 components, 28 jewels, Glucydur® balance, Incabloc® anti-shock device and a 3 days power reserve with two barrels.
The distinctive Panerai DNA and sense of design are key attributes of the Panerai Luminor 1950 3 days GMT. Once considered a utilitarian Navy time keeping device, now the watch is one of the most sought-after luxury timepieces. Its iconic design, masculine personality and high functionality are the main reasons why this model enjoys unparalleled success.
Greg – :
Can someone explain what is so special about the movement of this watch? I keep hearing about how great the internals are, but I honestly do not have a clue about why this is. Don’t get me wrong, I love Panerai watches and I am looking to get one this year, but first I need to know what am I getting. Any insights on this matter are greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Pierre Eschmann – :
The thing about the movement is that it is a new automatic Calibre created exclusively by Panerai and used for the very first time on the PAM00531. It is called P.9003 and it has 24 hours GMT instead of the usual 12 hours GMT. These are the main reasons why this watch is so popular among Panerai fans.
Greg – :
Now everything is clearer. I like the watch very much and think that it would look great on me. I’m just waiting for the right reasons to buy it
Father of Pearl – :
Another interesting thing about this Panerai is that through its sapphire crystal back you can see the new and redesigned power reserve indicator. It is such a unique and beautiful feature…if you are the type that likes these kinds of things.
Andreas – :
Panerai advertises the 24 hours GMT function of the PAM00531, but how does that work?
Dennis – :
There are 24 hours graduations around the inside of the dial where the minutes indicators usually are.
Andreas – :
Thanks! Yes, I thought that those were for the 24 hours second time zone. So the slimmer and longer hand is supposed to indicate the time in your home country?
Dennis – :
Correct. The long thin hand makes a full rotation in 24 hours. The older Panerai watches with a GMT function had a 12 hours second time zone which made it difficult for the wearer to determine if it was night or day in his home country.
Andreas – :
Clever, especially if you consider the fact that Panerai watches do not have a day/night indicator. I really like this watch. I may get one.
