Panerai is a legendary watch company. Its timepieces are incredibly famous and popular among wealthy people and celebrities. Its journey started out as a utilitarian timepiece used by the Italian Navy for its most dangerous missions. The large and sturdy case, the simple and easy to read dial, the outstanding precision and readability are the characteristics that funded its success. Even though its history has its ups and downs, in the end Officine Panerai turned out to be a key player on the market of luxury watches.
Unquestionably, the Luminor Marina is its best-selling collection. Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bill Clinton, Ashton Kutcher and Heidi Klum are just a few of the public figures that have been spotted wearing this high end watch. The truth is that the brand has been re-launched recently by one of Hollywood’s most complex muscular guy, Sylvester Stallone. This versatile and very talented actor discovered Panerai back in 1995 when the brand’s popularity was pretty low. Convinced by the company’s potential he started promoting the watches in his movies and at special events. Soon, Officine Panerai was back in the charts and everyone wanted to own on.
So what makes a Luminor Marina so special? Well, it all begins with its cushion-shaped stainless steel case which has a seamlessly fierce and manly look due to its navy inspired style. Its construction reflects a great care towards durability and utility, but due to its intensively polished surfaces it has a nice touch of subtle elegance. The bezel is round and simple, and on the right side of the case there is an oversized easy-grip winding crown that is pushed tightly onto the case by the trademarked crown guard which has a semicircular shape. The case back of the watch is manufactured from the same stainless steel and is stamped with the brand’s logos and markings.
The black dial of this Panerai Luminor Marina Automatic 44 mm is simple and clean, but in comparison with the other Luminor Marina models it is slightly more intricate. Usually, these models have only Arabic numerals, baton hour markers, a seconds sub-dial and a hours and a minutes hands. In addition to these elements, the Pam00164 also has dotted indexes for every hour marker and a date window at 3 o’clock with a magnifying lens. Somehow, even though it doesn’t feature that many design details, due to the unique font and large bulky size these create an intricate look for the watch. Over the face of the timepiece there is a 3.5 mm thick sapphire crystal that protects the model from water pressure, powerful shocks or daily use. Furthermore, the timepiece is water resistant to 300 meters.
Needless to say, the Panerai Luminor Marina Automatic 44 mm is equipped with an innovative in-house calibre that offers high end precision and durability. This mechanical automatic movement is called Panerai OP III Calibre and it has been tested and certified by C.O.S.C. To offer maximum accuracy and functionality, it is fitted with a PANERAI personalised oscillating weight, 21 jewels, 13¼ lignes, Glucydur® balance, 28,800 alternations/hour and an incabloc® anti-shock device. The movement provides 42 hours power reserve and features Côtes de Genève decoration on the bridges.
Rich heritage, cutting edge technologies and unique watch making skills- these are the key ingredients for Panerai’s success. Every single piece it produces is magnificently stylish and functional, but the Luminor Marina in particular attracts a very large number of watches enthusiast due to its unique adventurous spirit.
