Description
The original Rolex Submariner launched in 1954 was slightly different from what we now know as the contemporary Submariner. In its early life, the watch did not have a date window. Those who prefer vintage timepieces have a weakness for models that lack the date complications. This is the reason why during its history, Rolex produced Submariners with both the date and without the date. If you are among fans of the vintage version with the simple dial then you are surely familiar with the 114060 model and its irresistible charm.
The story of the 114060 starts in 1989 when the Submariner reference 14060 was launched. This watch was equipped with the in-house 3000 calibre and did not have the date window. Then, in 1999 this model was discontinued and replaced by the 14060M that had a 3130 Rolex Calibre with a full balance bridge. This version felt outdated in 2012 when the brand decided to introduce its upgrade, the no-date Submariner reference 114060. This contemporary model came with a new case design, a modern oyster bracelet with the Rolex-patented GlideLock innovation and an alluring ceramic bezel.
The Rolex Submariner 114060 debuted at the Basel World 2012 and even though its design and technical features are not dramatically different from its predecessors, this model introduced changes that were much needed. The redesigned case, the new bezel and bracelet are cosmetic and functional novelties that have been highly praised by fans due to their ability of adding a modern touch to this resolutely classic looking timepiece.
The 40 mm diameter Oyster case is water resistant to depths of 300 meters (about 1,000 feet) and it is manufactured from a solid block of anti-corrosive 904L stainless steel. The easy grip winding crown boosts the patented triplock waterproofness system which allows it to screw down tightly against the case just as a submarine’s hatch seals securely. The crown guard is an integral part of the middle case and protects it from external shocks. The case back is manufactured from the same steel and is hermetically screwed down. These subtle aesthetic details complete the new look of the no date Submariner case.
The 2012 Submariner 114060 comes with a Cerachrom bezel that is incredibly resistant to corrosion and scratches. The graduations on its surface are PVD coated with platinum and the small dot from the 12 o’clock triangle is filled with Chromalight material to cast a long lasting blue glow. As all other Submariner bezels, this too rotates only in one direction, anti-clockwise, allowing tracking of elapsed diving time.
The newer bracelet of the no date Submariner is actually a solid-link Oyster bracelet manufactured from 904L stainless steel. The band comes with a glidelock extension system and a new-generation Oysterlock safety clasp. Its patented system can be found under the clasp cover and makes it possible for its wearer to change the length of the bracelet by 2 mm. This way you can comfortably wear it over a diving suit.
The black Submariner dial is probably the most recognizable dial in the world. The classic dive watch enjoys a unique readability and many fans agree that the lack of date creates a stunning symmetry. The 114060 version offers the advantages of the Maxi Dial that is a must for contemporary Rolex sports watches. The hour markers and hand on the Maxi Dial are bolder and more pronounced thus offering a more rugged and masculine look. The superior readability is completed by the addition of Chromalight on the hands and markers, this special lume glows blue in the dark.
At the interior of the modern no date Rolex Submariner we find the in-house 3130 Calibre. This self-winding COSC-certified chronometer features a parachrom hairspring, a 48 hours power reserve and an impressive precision. It is a reliable automatic movement that is very durable and easy to service.
The 114060 no date Submariner embodies an incredible attention to detail. It is a flawlessly constructed and designed timepiece that aspires at the ideal of horological perfection. Besides its vintage roots and complex history, the watch is famous for providing elegance and maximum performances on the wrist.
